Paws on paddles - Week 5
In this final week of our Paws on paddles course, we are dedicating time to answer the most frequently asked questions about paddle boarding with your dog.
FAQ and troubleshooting when paddle boarding with dogs
Does your dog jump off the paddle board? Should they wear a leash or not? And what to do if your dog is stressed when being on the paddle board? That is some of the questions we are about to cover.
Things do not always go as smoothly as planned. Every dog is different, and that's ok! We are here to help you through the process of enjoying this new activity together!

When can I start paddle boarding with my dog?
Paddle boarding is an activity that is gentle to your dog's body, meaning both puppies and senior dogs can enjoy it. This is actually a great way to build a strong confidence and body! However, always pay attention to your dog´s needs and stop the session if they seem tired or uncomfortable.
Should I use a leash when paddle boarding with my dog?
In general we recommend you to not have your dog leashed when paddle boarding, as the leash can get tangled in your dog's legs or get stuck in objects. If you tie your dog to the paddle board it can be dangerous if you fall off the board, and they cannot get free.
Some dogs do however need to be leashed. Some areas even require it.
Choose a lightweight and comfortable leash. If you need to attach the leash, you can get a Panic snap carabiner where you can easily detach the leash with one pull if needed.
Can a dog puncture a paddle board?
Most paddle boards are made from durable materials that can withstand your dog's nails. As long as you trim the nails and keep them short, it should be no problem! If you are worried about puncturing the board, you can put booties on your dog's paws for added protection. Booties with a rubber surface also help add traction.
My dog jumps off the paddle board, what to do?
Figure out what causes them to jump off. Are they too excited to swim, or are they uncomfortable?
Either way, go back to practicing skills and cues on land. Reward your dog for the desired behavior, build confidence and help them understand what you want from them. Remember to always use a release cue. When that works well, gradually increase difficulty by asking your dog to stay on the board for longer, and then move to the water. You can of course also use a leash as a tool to help your dog succeed.
My dog gets stressed on the paddle board. How can I help them relax?
In this case it is also important to figure out what causes the behavior, and go back to the basics to build confidence and understanding. For some dogs, it helps to have a defined task when on the board, for example, sitting or lying down. Keep the sessions short, and reward your dog when they do well.
