Guide to dog raincoats: how to keep your dog dry and comfortable
When the rain starts pouring, your adventure doesn’t have to stop. Whether you’re out for a quick walk or an all-day mountain trek, the right dog raincoat keeps your dog dry, comfortable, and ready to explore, no matter the conditions.
At Non-stop dogwear, we believe that bad weather is just an opportunity for a new adventure. But choosing the right waterproof dog jacket can be overwhelming. Which one actually keeps your dog dry? How should it fit? Does your dog even need one?
Find the perfect jacket based on your dog’s needs, activity level, and weather conditions!
Does my dog need a rain jacket?
Breeds like Labradors, Newfoundlands, and Flat-Coated Retrievers have water-repellent coats that shed moisture naturally. But dogs with short or thin fur, like Vizslas, Greyhounds, and Dobermans, can quickly get soaked and chilled in wet conditions.
Even for water-loving dogs, staying dry means staying comfortable. A waterproof dog jacket prevents your dog from getting drenched, reducing chills, and irritation from wet fur, mud, and dirt. Older dogs and puppies are even more susceptible, as they struggle to regulate body temperature effectively and are more prone to discomfort in wet conditions.
Signs your dog might need a raincoat:
- They shiver in rain or cold, wet weather
- Their fur soaks up water quickly
- They get muddy bellies and legs on walks
- They spend a lot of time outdoors, training, or working in wet conditions
No two dogs are the same, which is why having the right rainwear makes all the difference.
What makes a great dog raincoat?
Not all dog raincoats offer the same level of protection. The best waterproof dog jacket keeps your dog dry without restricting movement or causing discomfort, no matter the conditions. When choosing the right raincoat, consider the following key factors.
Waterproof and breathable
A good dog raincoat, like a high-quality human rain jacket, must balance waterproofing and breathability. The waterproof rating, measured in millimeters (mm), indicates how much rain the fabric can resist before water starts seeping in. A 5,000mm rating is enough for light showers, while a 20,000mm+ rating handles heavy downpours and prolonged exposure to wet conditions. But staying dry isn’t just about blocking rain. Your dog also needs breathability to prevent overheating. This is measured in grams per square meter (g/m²), showing how much moisture (like sweat) escapes.
For short walks in mild conditions, 5,000g/m² breathability is generally enough, as your dog won’t generate excessive heat. More active dogs, especially those running or hiking in wet weather, need a higher breathability rating, ideally 10,000g/m² or more, to stay dry on the inside as well as the outside.
Taped seams = No leaks
A waterproof dog jacket isn’t truly waterproof unless it has taped seams. Stitching creates tiny holes where water can seep in. Taped seams seal these openings, preventing leaks and keeping your dog fully protected in heavy rain.
Unrestricted movement and perfect fit
Your dog should feel like they’re wearing nothing at all. The right fit ensures comfort, mobility, and long-term durability.
- Full shoulder mobility: Essential for running at top speed, jumping, and playing without restriction. Look for ergonomic designs with pre-shaped panels that allow the jacket to move naturally with your dog’s stride.
- Snug, adjustable fit: Too tight, and it compresses the coat, reducing its insulating ability and restricting movement. Too loose, and it shifts, leading to chafing, discomfort, and even injuries over time. A high-quality raincoat should feature multiple adjustment points, typically at the neck, chest, waist, and tail, to provide a secure and custom fit for all body shapes.
- Leg straps: Keep the jacket secure in high winds and fast movement, preventing twisting or riding up.
Visibility = Safety first
Dark clouds, fog, and rain reduce visibility. Not just for you, but for cars, cyclists, and others on the trail.
Reflective details are the key to ensuring your dog remains visible from all angles, especially in low-light conditions. 3M™ reflective elements catch and reflect light from headlights, street lamps, and flashlights, making your dog easier to spot and keep them safe. Bright-colored raincoats can also further enhance visibility in all seasons and environments.
Which dog rain gear should I choose?
We focus on developing high-quality gear built to withstand the toughest conditions while ensuring your dog’s freedom of movement. Whether your dog is sprinting through wet forests or walking in the rain, every detail matters.
With a wide range of sizes, our rain jackets and suits are designed to provide a perfect fit for all shapes and sizes, from small and agile to large and powerful.
